It's now over a year since Mubarak Bala – President of the Humanist Association of Nigeria – was sentenced to 24 years in prison, in connection with a series of Facebook posts that some deemed to be 'blasphemous' and 'likely to cause a public disturbance'.
What is Humanists International doing?
Thanks to the generosity of its members and supporters, Humanists International is working closely with a team of lawyers to ensure that Bala’s appeal is heard before the Kano State High Court.

While the legal team focuses on his appeal, we are asking the wider humanist community to help us keep Bala’s case in the public eye, on the agendas of diplomats, and to ensure that Mubarak stays strong physically and mentally.
